We’d talked about how to choose the right sofa last month. Now is time for the second piece for your living space, coffee tables! ☕
Coffee tables are more straight forward. Here are a few tips we can share to help you decide on your next coffee table. The things to consider includes:
Shapes
Round
A round coffee table softens the lines in the room and are easy to walk around.
Rounded coffee tables are highly recommended for families with kids.
Square
Square coffee tables will be perfect for L shaped sectional sofas.
This shape will be ideal of smaller sitting rooms.
Oval
Oval shaped coffee table will provide the best of both worlds. The rounded soft edges will soften the space but the longer silhouette will provide more space for display.
Suitable for long sofas.
Size
Now that we know the size of coffee table we like, lets talk about the size of the coffee tables to pair with our sofa.
Measure measure, measure! Always measure your living space, sofa, and of course the coffee table. Proportion is key. Finding the right length is all about how the coffee table pairs with the dimension of your sofa.
The rule of thumb will be approximately 2/3 of the length of your sofa.
Example with standard sofa
Let’s take a standard 3 seater sofa size as example. A standard 3 seater sofa is about 2,400mm (8ft).
2/3 of 2,400mm will be ~1,600mm. This will be the ideal size for a coffee table with sofa this size.
Example with L shape sofa
L shape sofas are slightly different. Instead of measuring the whole sofa length, we calculate just the horizontal part of the sofa.
2/3 of the horizontal part of the sofa will be ~1,000mm.
Materials
Last but not least, material for your coffee table is crucial too. Choose a material that is equipped for your lifestyle and is durable. Review the coffee table’s maintenance requirements so you can pick something manageable according to your lifestyle.
Wood
Durable, adaptable, and lesser maintenance needed; of course wood are the most popular material for coffee tables.
Glass
Feeling adventurous? Tempered glass creates a more open and airy aesthetic. BUT, maintenance will be a pain to ensure it looks pristine all the time.

You don’t have to limit yourself to a long / oval shape coffee table. Combining a big round coffee table with a small side table will also be viable for sofas this size.
Example with L shape sofa
L shape sofas are slightly different. Instead of measuring the whole sofa length, we calculate just the horizontal part of the sofa.
2/3 of the horizontal part of the sofa will be ~1,000mm.
Besides the length of the coffee table, the height of the coffee table is crucial too. The height of the coffee table should be 1 – 2 inches lower than your sofa or at the same height as your seat cushion.
Just a quick tip… Having a 500mm space between your sofa and your coffee table will ensure there is enough space to move around and lean over comfortably from your sofa to place things on the table.
